PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

Delivering Culturally Appropriate Care:
Pilot Breakthrough Series Collaborative

AFL Enterprises, LLC has partnered with the National Network for Oral Health Access (NNOHA) to develop quality improvement strategies and programs since 2006. Developing the Health Center Dental Dashboard and leading national Quality Improvement Collaboratives aimed at improving preventive services, developing same day care delivery, and integrating diabetes care.

Recognizing the opportunity for improvement in patient engagement, AFL developed a 6-month pilot collaborative to identify best practices, community-based solutions, and tools to empower health center dental programs in implementing systems change and deliver culturally appropriate care to improve outcomes.

AFL is working with four Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) in Washington. This Breakthrough Series Collaborative is supporting health centers in developing innovative strategies to increase patient engagement. Health center Care Teams—comprised of leaders, clinicians, dental assistants, and office and support staff—are learning to provide culturally appropriate oral health care where all patients feel safe, respected, and affirmed. Culturally informed care practices including trauma-informed motivational interviewing, patient-centered care, clear communication, and quality metrics are designed to elicit real-time patient feedback for systems improvement.

The Collaborative centers around the Arcora Foundation curriculum, "Delivering Culturally Appropriate Care in The Dental Office," AFL is leading participating health centers through:

  • Completing all modules of the curriculum

  • Applying quality improvement tools in their daily practices to put the curriculum into action

  • Using quantitative and qualitative data to test metrics for measuring culturally appropriate care

Stronger patient engagement, better conversations, and strategies centered in the patients’ ethnic and socio-cultural background are empowering patients to trust their care team as partners for improved outcomes.

AFL has focused specifically on anti-racist methods and training to improve access and quality of care for the participating health centers' racially minoritized populations.
